Specifics

The SOF is a unit unparalleled in the history of modern Ukraine. Operators are trained in reconnaissance, raids behind enemy lines, underground work beyond the front line and building agent networks, search and evacuation of prisoners or hostages, counter-terrorism and medical aid.

Criteria

The unit differs not only in its high candidate requirements — only 10% of candidates pass SOF selection — but also in the training of its personnel. The new special units take in highly motivated, stress-resistant and experienced soldiers.

Selection phase

For three weeks the cadets live in tents at the training ground with no contact with the outside world. Even text messages to family are forbidden. Moving around the camp is allowed only at a run. Breaking this rule brings punishment. Not everyone endures the daily physical load — many candidates quit, others fail the psychological screening.

Training features

Those who pass selection move on to training in which every soldier must master one of five specialisations — commander, engineer, weapons specialist, medic or signaller. All specialisations are interchangeable: operators simultaneously hold working knowledge of medicine basics or demolition.
